This post is going to be a shocker!
More self-portraits.
This whole experience has helped me learn more about looking for light, finding new angles, getting creative without props and fancy anything. I’m sure it seems vain and ridiculous for me to share SO many pics of myself. I get it. There is a moral to my story…stay with me…
These were taken at the very end. I thought sitting on my front step would look kinda cool in black and white. I set up my tripod and got super close to the 50mm lens. I didn’t realize I had cropped off the top of my head, but I kinda like the way they turned out.
I had a lot of fun shooting these images. There was a very warm breeze, not much humidity and early-ish in the evening and cloudy. All the conditions of a favourable photo set. Simple blanket and a book. The purpose of this set was to practice laying down poses to work with shapes and angles. Not easy when you can’t see the back of the camera to know if you are nailing focus or finding flattering shapes.
I love the black and whites, but kept a few in colour. Well…just because.
The beauty of black and white. Can you guess the colour of the siding on this building? This will work nicely for standing wall poses…my pup even snuck in for some action, LOL
Happy to see the corn patch is thriving this year. This is popcorn. Nothing more satisfying than scrubbing dried kernels off the cob and putting them right into the popcorn maker.
Direct sun. WOW! That’s hard to work with. So many bad expressions and scrunched up faces.
I am definitely feeling pretty good about the focus I achieved on these. Took a LOT of shots to find the focus point. What I realized in this set is open shade, even light head to toe and in the background is really all you need. These were taken around 5pm, so the trees behind me were creating open shade. Open shade is shade where if you look up, there is nothing overhead. They key to a good exposure is to not have hot spots or brightly lit areas anywhere in the frame. Soft even light.
These were taken a couple days before the outside shots. These were taken inside against a plain black background. Which do you prefer? White sweater or black sweater? I can’t decide.
I liked these better in black and white than I did in colour. I feel like the emotion and expression is more genuine in black and white. I didn’t do any editing other than sharpness and exposure….so the glass glare stays. #reallife
Last ones. Backlit and side lit. Much harder to get good exposure and focus.
The learning with all these images, is it can be done. From my home, outside without any props. Simple, elegant portraits. Now is the time to reach out and let me know if you want to see yourself through my lens.
These were all taken without me even being able to see through the lens to check angle, pose and expression. It is a LOT harder than taking a cute selfie. If I can take these of myself, I can take them of you…easier, faster and better
Reach out. Let’s do this.
