As some of you are aware, my word for 2019 is Educated.
I LOVE learning. Always have. Hence all the arts and crafts hobbies I have learned over the years.
I accepted a job years back that had me sitting at a desk from 8-4pm everyday. My lunch breaks were spent at the office and going from being an Irish Pub Manager to sitting was an adjustment.
I decided to learn how to knit. I was laser focused on paying off a bunch of debt and had very little means to take up a new hobby. Fortunately, my job was a short walk from a public library so I went over, got a library card and took out a bunch of books. I went to Michael’s Craft and Hobby Store and bought a Learn to Knit kit with a couple needles and the most horrible acrylic yarn with a how-to book.
My Knitting obsession had started. All because I said I wanted to. I had zero knitting experience growing up, but I had a will and a desire to learn. That’s all I have ever needed.
I also decided that why buy dyed yarn when I can dye it myself. Yep! Bought some cool Professional dyes and did that for a bit. Turns out that dyeing yarn is messy and requires more space than I have, so that didn’t last long.
After a few years and many hats, socks, sweaters later, I wanted to learn more. I took a spinning class. Nope. Not on a bicycle…a spinning wheel course to learn how to make my own yarn. Now I own 3 spinning wheels, all of which are fully functional and awesome.
After figuring out how to spin my own yarn, it naturally progressed to shearing Sheep and Alpacas and processing fleece to spin. I don’t actually shear (not even on my list, believe or not), I’m a helper and look forward to shearing season, probably more than I should.
This is how I work. Always learning.
While I still knit and have a Rug Hooking Project on the go, Photography grabbed my attention many years ago and for the last 4 years or so, I have studied from some amazing Mentors in both Boudoir, as well as Glamour and Weddings.
I currently have two active Mentors. Jen Rozenbaum and Sue Bryce. If you are not sure who they are, click on their names to see their amazing work. So much to learn from both of them so I am so excited for this year.
As I sit on a quick flight for a Business Trip, I am doing some catch up assignments from the book Worth Every Penny by Sarah Petty and Erin Verbeck.
